GETTING TO COSTA RICA
More than 40 direct flights are available daily from U.S. cities, including Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. Situated in the Central Standard time zone, the time in Costa Rica varies by no more than two hours from any U.S. location. Two commuter airlines, Nature Air and Sansa, serve two airports that are within an hour’s drive of Dominical.

Arrival at Juan Santamaria Int'l (SJO) - After exiting the terminal, head towards immigration (follow posted signs). Then proceed downstairs to baggage claim, wait for your luggage and proceed thru to the customs area with your luggage.

There are 3 options to get to/from Dominical:

  1. Air - 45 min Flight (HIGHLY recommended)
If you are continuing your flight to Palma Sur Airport (PMZ) [small airport - see photos below], there are two flight operators that fly from San Jose to the Dominical area. Nature Air (www.natureair.com) flys out of an area in San Jose called Pavas about a 20 min. drive from the international airport.  Sansa (www.flysansa.com) flys from the international airport.  You can either fly into Quepos or Palmar Sur.  Both are about a 45 min. drive away from Canto del Mar, and taxis are usually always on standby at the airstrips. If you are continuing by air, exit the SJO Airport and turn left at the corner of the street and turn left again into the Sansa area (signs posted). It is only a 3 min walk. Ask for directions if you are unsure. NOTE: DO NOT take a taxi since it will be a waste of money :-)

After landing at Palma Sur airport, take a taxi/car rental. Head towards Dominical Beach. The villa is located on the Costanera highway. You will see a "Villas by Tekoa - Luxury Vacation Rentals" sign and a soccer field on your right. Make a right and head straight down the dirt road. The guard shack is on your left and the villa is located up the dirt road.

  2. Mountain Route Drive (4 hrs): Cartago -> San Isidro -> Dominical
If you are driving from San Jose (it is recommended that you rent a navigation as the Costa Rican roads are not marked), it is about a 4 hour drive if you are taking the mountain route. This route heads southeast through San Jose to Cartago, where you traverse the Cordillera via the Cerro del Muerte to San Isidro, and descend through the mountains to Dominical. The Cerro del Muerte is a winding road, that can be dangerous at times, but beautiful, reaching altitudes over 10,000 ft. Please note that it is a very curvy drive with sharp turns and 2 lanes. Also, during the rainy season, there will be heavy fog and mist and it could possibly be a bit challenging to drive for people not familiar with the road.

At the intersection of the roads from Quepos, San Isidro and Dominical, there is a police checkpoint. Go through the checkpoint and cross the Baru river overpass. Immediately to your right is the turnoff to downtown Dominical, but keep going straight for about 3-4 kilometers on the Costanera highway until you see the sign for "Villas by Tekoa - Luxury Vacation Rentals" and a soccer field on your left. Canto del Mar is located at this turn. So, make a left and head straight down the dirt road. The guard shack is on your left and the villa is located up the dirt road. You've arrived!

  3. Coastal Route Drive (4-5hrs): Jaco -> Quepos -> Dominical
If you are driving from San Jose (it is recommended that you rent a navigation as the Costa Rican roads are not marked), it is about a 4 hour drive if you are taking the coastal route through Jaco Beach and Quepos. Please note that there is a 30 mile drive on unpaved road.

RETURNING HOME
Palma Sur Airport is about a 40 min drive from the Dominical area. The small airport opens at 9.30am for check-in so it is not necessary to be there extra early to check-in as you would in the U.S. airports.

After your flight and you land at SJO Airport, go claim your luggage and then head out of the Sansa Air / Nature Air area. Make a right when you see the road ahead. Then make a right again to get to the SJO Airport entrance. Again, DO NOT take a taxi as it is only a 3 min. walk.

Once inside, be sure to pay your departure tax prior to checking in. Tax is about $26/person. After you are done, fill out the immigration document that was given to you when you paid your tax. Now you can check-in.

If driving, reference #2 /#3 above.

Have a safe flight home!
